The “Superman Suit” appeared at the Westport Windriders Festival in 1994. It consisted of a superman sweatshirt and a cape that has the kite clubs logo on it. It was made by Susie Wheaton for the auction. There was not a lot of interest in it so my husband bought it for me for $25. I went into the restroom and put it on, then pretend to fly back into the room where all the kite flyers were. Well needless to say I was heart broken to find out that I did not get to keep it forever. It was donated to the club to be auctioned off at each meeting to raise money for our festivals.
Since 1994 I have worn it in the US, England, France and Germany. I have greeted people at the airport and worn it out to dinner. The looks have been priceless. Who would have know that putting on the shirt and cape could be that much fun with people from all over the world.
In 2000, I asked Susie if she would make a Wonder Woman suit and she did (I was tired of being superman).
The rest of the story is that the superman outfit for the past 13 years has done its job to raise money for the festivals. Now we have the Wonder Woman outfit, they get auctioned off at each one of our meetings. You can bid on it for your self to wear or better yet for one of your friends to wear at an up coming event.
When you wear the outfit, get your picture taken to prove you wore it and then you will receive a Superman pin and I hope soon there will be a Wonder Women pin.
The original Superman outfit is now at the World Kite Museum. We are now on the second Superman outfit.Who would have thought that something 13 years ago would still be helping us raise funds for our festivals. Enjoy the pictures and keep checking them I am sure there will be more to come.
